Citytrip HongKong
(3 day stop-over)
The ticked to Japan allowed a stop-over in HongKong. As Philips Design has a branch there as well, an arrangement was made to work one day, but stay for 3 days. Enough time to get to know the city and spend a very valuable day with the Hong Kong collegues.
The Excelsior hotel is situatied directly at Causeway Bay, the bar and resaturant area of Hong Kong Island. On the other side lies Kowloon and on the picture above you can see the location of the old airport. It's now situated to a new airport at 45 minutes with a shuttle bus.

Many nice prictures can be taken in Hong Kong, but there are also many ugly buildings. Skyscrapers, eight to ten of the same ones clustered, and again another 10.000 people found a place to live. They all look old and grey, airco's dripping and laundry hanging out to dry. Not a nice place to live... |
For 25 Eurocents you can get on the city tram that runs up and down Hong Kong island. This is an ideal way to get acquainted with the city. Many shops and department stores but we did not come for that. The parks were nicer and bigger than we could ever imagine for such a crowded city.
Philips Design collegues advised us to go to Lamma Island and enjoy the seafood. There's not that much to do on the island, but the seafood is reason enough to take that 40 minute ferry trip. It's not possible anymore to take pictures of the crab below, but it was very tasteful...
HongKong is nice to visit for a couple of days, but if you would spend another 3 days there I think you've seen most of it. Hong Kong was a bigger cultureshock than Japan altogether. Especially the living circumstances made a big impression, but the rest was very positive: nice, diverse, clean !

Inmiddels alweer 3 keer naar Hong Kong geweest. Bovenstaand de eerste indruk uit 2003. Deze derde keer wat meer tijd genomen om wat rond te kijken, nu meer op het vaste land van Kowloon: Sha-tin, TST, Mong-Kok. Hieronder nog enkele foto's van het gebied rondom de 'Ladies Market' in Mong Kok, Kowloon.

Tijdens mijn tweede trip naar Hong Kong, in 2005, al eens 'Temple street' bezocht, maar nu weer een jaar later, op zondagmiddag het gebied rondom de Ladies Market bekeken. Een lange straat met overvolle stalletjes, links ervan een met sportschoenen en rechts met electronica. Daartussen allemaal kleine kraampjes waar vers eten en drinken wordt verkocht. |
Het kost allemaal niets en is dan ook echt het 'plastic poppespul' wat je van 'Made in China' verwacht. Maar voor mij 100 maal leuker dan de grote winkelstraten waar je hetzelfde kunt kopen als in een gemiddelde Nederlandse stad.

Ook voor de lokale jeugd is dit een favoriete bezigheid op de vrije zondagmiddag. Het is dan ook enorm druk, met hier en daar ook wat toeristen ! |
En dan niet alleen winkelen natuurlijk, maar ook af en toe iets eten van de lokale 'snackbar'...
Onderstaande groente kwam ik op een groente marktje in een zijstraatje tegen. Als we op het werk gaan Dim-Summen bij Nieuw-Nan-King aan de Markt in Eindhoven is dit een van de favotrieten...
Inmiddels dus drie keer in Hong Kong geweest en een iets completer beeld gekregen. Je schijnt in Hong Kong ook prachtig te kunnen wandelen, en aan de andere kant van het eiland op het strand is het ook goed toeven begrijp ik. Dat bewaren we dan misschien voor een volgende keer... |
